I am not pregnant and don't plan to be for probably at least another year, but I've been heavily researching natural birth for a good 6 months now in preparation for the future. My heart leans towards wanting to have a home birth when the time comes, but my husband is having a difficult time with the idea. He says he would feel worlds better about having our first baby in a birth center, which is something that I would be completely okay with as well. The problem with this, though, is that we live in West Michigan, which means we are surrounded by hospitals, with no non-hospital birth centers anywhere close by. Google only turns up two birth centers in all of Michigan -
one is almost 3 hours away from my home, and
the other is about an hour and a half away from my home.
Now, obviously, since I've never been pregnant or given birth, I don't know this for sure, but
I am assuming that it is totally unrealistic to think that we would drive at least an hour and a half to a birth center to give birth after I have started labor. Is this a correct assumption? Is a birth center birth out of the question for me (at least, as long as we are living in our current home) given how far away the birth centers are?
I guess on the bright side, we *are* planning to move to the Tempe/Phoenix Arizona area in the next 3 years or so, and from what I understand there is at least one birth center in that area... it would push our TTC plans back by about 2 years, but it might be worth it, right?
I guess I am just looking for advice/ideas about all of this. I would especially love to hear from anyone out there who is from the West Michigan area, as well as people in the Tempe/Phoenix Arizona area... but any advice/ideas are welcome and very much appreciated!
